Spoons to imitate bait fish found in
our Lochs
The lures I use fall
into 5 different categories. They are: spoons, shallow crankbaits , deep
crankbaits, Kynoch type plugs and spinner rigs
.The spoons I use are
American flutter spoons, they are made of a very light gauge metal
sheet, and are mainly fished on dipsy’s or downrigger’s to get them
to any depth. They are available in a vast range of colours and sizes
from 2” to 51/2” long.
In the USA spoons are sold by pattern name just like we name fly
patterns. Some of the unusual spoon names are monkey puke, orange
crush, superman and liberace

A
selection of US spoons : watermelon w/seeds, liberace, caramel dolphin
and gold monkeyshine
SHALLOW
CRANKBAITS
The
lures that fall into this category are rapala minnows, storm
thunderstick or reefrunner little ripper or any lure that has a max
diving depth of approx 6ft . I fish shallow crank’s with dipsy’s
d/rigger, lead core and snap weights to get them to the depth that fish
are showing on the sonar screen. I buy all of my crankbaits from the
USA as I will not pay £6 to £8 for a lure when I can get the
same one’s
for £2 to £3 even though it can take up to 6 weeks to get them
here from the USA.
