LURES

Deep diving crankbait lures that are in this category are deep thunderstick, reef runner deep diver, luhr jensen powerdive minnow and the hotlips trolling model. These lures will all dive to 20ft plus deep. I mainly use them for fishing with 3 way rig’s, with a flutter spoon above them. I will also use them on their own when flatline trolling. One point to note is that you cannot use them with a dipsy diver, as the back pull from the lure will pull against the dipsy and make it difficult to control.

Above lures are   Luhr jensen power dive minnow, Hot lips troller and deep jnr thunder stick.

KYNOCH KILLER OR CUT PLUG

Black and Gold and Pink and Blue Rainbow homemade plugs

Many people wrongly attribute the invention of this lure to the late Ian Kynoch from the river Tay. He introduced this deadly lure from the USA/Canada where it is was sold under many names e.g.: Lucky Louie, Tillicum , J Plug, Martin plugs and many others, with patterns and names being the subject of US patents, some dating back to the 1920’s.

These old plugs command high prices in the tackle collecting markets, with boxed examples in mint condition selling for $200 to £300 each.

Cut plugs started off in the west coast of the USA from California to British Columbia in Canada where they were used by commercial fishermen trolling for salmon in the sea. The main bait of choice was the Plug cut herring, this was a dead herring cut at an precise angle at the head so it would wobble and roll like an injured fish, but as with many natural baits they were time consuming to mount and prepare for fishing so an artificial lure was made and this was called the “Cut Plug” because it mimicked the action of the natural Plug cut herring. They were sold by the lure manufacturing companies in two versions, the commercial version in 6 packs and sport versions available singly, some of the commercial versions had interesting variations with multi hooks and one version that when a fish took it, the lure spun round and a large single hook gaffed it under the chin!.

Modern versions of the lure in the UK are sold as The Tay Lure, Killer Plugs and Kynochs, they mainly carry one treble hook and are sold in the popular Salmon colours: Yellow belly, Black and Red, Black and Gold and the usual “Salmon” colours.

In the USA there are many company’s who make Cut Plugs, Luhr Jensen, Silver Horde R&R Plugs, Lyman, North Point Nailer and quite a few more. They offer the plugs in a vast range of sizes and colours, Luhr Jensen alone have 37 colours and 4 different sizes from 3 ¼” to 5 ½” long. They are also available in rattling and non rattling versions and one company makes a plug that holds a chemical light stick for fishing in the dark or low light conditions. Nearly all the plugs sold in the US have a hook harness that has two treble hooks, this extends the rear treble to or just beyond the tail of the lure and this hook arrangement does a good job on hooking  those tail nipping fish and I have had fish that have been lip hooked on the trailing treble.
